How to avoid rear-end collisions

On Behalf of | Sep 14, 2021 | Car Accidents

Rear-end collisions are extremely common. They generally occur at intersections, in heavy traffic and at lower speeds. Taking these factors into consideration, there are methods that can help to prevent rear-end accidents from taking place.

Research suggests that paying more attention and ensuring that lights work properly can reduce the risk of rear-end collisions. Of course, “paying more attention” is a rather vague term on its own and requires further explanation.

What does “paying more attention” mean?

Shortly after passing their test, drivers can develop bad habits. It is beneficial to stick to healthy driving routines that emphasize a solid use of mirrors while traveling. Frequently looking in rear- and side-view mirrors means that you are more aware of your surroundings and any potential hazards that may cause you to brake suddenly.

When pulling up behind another vehicle, ensuring that you can see both the rear tires, as well as some of the road surface between the two vehicles, is a useful routine to adopt. This is commonly referred to as the “tarmac and tires” approach.

How do lights factor into rear-end collisions?

Utilizing your turn signals effectively can be extremely beneficial. Providing fellow drivers with a warning as to your maneuvers could help to prevent any unwelcome surprises that result in sudden braking.

Crucially, vehicle lights should be regularly checked and maintained. Lights that do not work properly have no value and could lead to another driver failing to notice you.

Familiarizing yourself with some common methods of preventing rear-end collisions can help keep you safe. Knowing your legal rights and obligations in relation to vehicular accidents is also in your best interests.
