The real problem on the roads: Human error

Do you think you're a safe driver? If you asked friends and family members, would they tell you that they're very safe behind the wheel?

Honestly, odds are that anyone you ask will say that they're a safe, careful driver. You could ask strangers at the grocery store, and that's the response you're going to get. Most people honestly think that they are safe.

However, research shows that it's just not true. In fact, studies have claimed that up to 94 percent of all car accidents happen simply due to human error. That, of course, makes it the leading cause of car accidents by an incredibly long shot. It's not close.

Now, "driver error" encompasses a lot of different mistakes. If someone doesn't see a stop sign and runs it, that's driver error. If they send a text message behind the wheel and swerve into oncoming traffic, that's also driver error. Even simple things, like following too close and accidentally rear-ending someone during an unexpected traffic slowdown, count as driver error.

But your main takeaway here is clear: Other people are the reason for most car accidents. They may want to blame the weather, the road design or something else entirely, and while that is true for about 6 percent of car accidents, most of the time, it is just the driver who causes it.

Have you been injured in one of these accidents? If so, you may be able to seek compensation for medical bills, lost wages, permanent disabilities and a whole host of other costs. Make sure you know what steps to take.
