How do car accidents happen?

A car accident can happen in an unlimited number of ways but there are some circumstances that personal injury lawyers see time and time again. The saddest fact about the following car accident causes, however, is not that they happen on a regular basis but that most of them should be completely avoidable if motorist followed traffic laws, stayed attentive and practiced defensive driving techniques -- and if municipalities took better care of our roads.

With this in mind, here are the top causes of car accidents that you should try to avoid in Washington:

Distracted driving: Cellphone use while driving is a pandemic problem that takes people's eyes off the road, distracts them from what's happening around them and causes countless deaths and injuries.

Drunk driving: Everyone knows it's illegal, but they do it anyway -- largely because of the way alcohol releases our inhibitions, and loosens our sense of danger and responsibility.

Speeding: Speed limits are scientifically calculated to reduce the threat and/or severity of car accidents, but many drivers in Washington endanger their fellow citizens by completely ignoring these laws.

Poor road design and poor road conditions: The city and municipalities are responsible to properly design and maintain roadways so they are safe and prevent accidents, but sometimes they neglect in their duties in this regard.

If you were hurt by any of the above common car accident causes, you might want to investigate your legal rights and options under Washington vehicle accident and personal injury laws. As a victim of a car accident that wasn't your fault, the law is probably on your side.
