What are some safe driving tips to help avoid a car accident?

Driving in Washington often means battling the weather. In any season, though, there are safety tips that you can follow to avoid a car accident. Of course, no amount of written tips can teach you how to operate a vehicle or keep you safe while on the road. However, the following basic information can come in handy.

To begin, always check your car's owner's manual to find out what is the best way to start your car. Is the parking brake on? If it is a manual drive transmission, the gear must be in neutral and the clutch must be depressed.

When accelerating, do so gradually and smoothly. Taking off too quickly can just make your wheels spin and can be dangerous on slippery streets. With a manual transmission, letting out the clutch and pressing the accelerator at the same time can give you an easy start. This will help you avoid stalling out.

Sometimes, no matter how carefully you drive or how smoothly you accelerate, others on the road are not as cautious. They are driving along as if they are the only ones on the road. They can cause you to be involved in an accident that can cause injury or even death. The best advice given can be just to drive defensively.

Steering is an area that we all take for granted. Your hands should be on opposite sides of the wheel at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Being comfortable with the steering wheel is the most important part of driving. Positioning your hands this way will help you avoid the air bag if you should be hit by another car.

If you are injured in an accident that isn't your fault, you can seek compensation from the at-fault driver. There may be other individuals or entities that are also at fault. An attorney can provide you more information on how to proceed with a civil lawsuit.
